Karen Morgan and Matthew Cole are Vegan Society trustees and were interviewed during the Bristol Vegan Fayre 2009.
To be trustee requires skill and ability to be effective, trustees are ultimately responsible for the charity, fot the research an many other important tasks of the Vegan Society.
“…we work on the improuving the provison of vegan food for instance in care homes or hospitals, we try to encourage to provide vegan food in the schools…we made a website called wegatopia one of the things we are trying to do is create links trough the countries, create links between academia and activism. We are both sociologists in academia, utopian studies in Bristol University. We’ve written a few papers discussing the idea about why veganism is a utopia movement. We are talking about transforming the society in a radical way. Veganism is a practical solution for a lot of issues in the world. The biggest obstacle is people saying we are not realistic, the implication of that would seem to be just do nothing, give up. That’s not an option for us. The debates of climate change, of food security, ongoing malnutrition despite that enough food is produced to feed anybody in the world but it’s not getting to the right people…
There are many many opportunity where veganism is a real sensible, practical solution, we need a political will to make it happen, we need also academic like us doing research, making contribution to the vegan movement, giving some good evidence for what we are arguing”.

Veganism is the practice of eliminating the use of animal products. Ethical vegans reject the commodity status of animals and the use of animal products for any purpose, while dietary vegans or strict vegetarians eliminate them from their diet only. Another form, environmental veganism, rejects the use of animal products on the premise that the industrial practice is environmentally damaging and unsustainable. The term ‘vegan’ was coined in England in 1944 by Donald Watson, co-founder of the British Vegan Society, to mean ‘non-dairy vegetarian’; the society also opposed the use of eggs as food. It extended its definition in 1951 to mean ‘the doctrine that man should live without exploiting animals,’ and in 1960 H. Jay Dinshah started the American Vegan Society, linking veganism to the Jainist concept of ahimsa, the avoidance of violence against living things.

A new study released by the BC Cancer Research Center and published in Cancer Research a journal of the American Association of Cancer Research, revealed that a High Protein diet could reduce the risk of developing cancer. So, does this mean that diets like the Atkins or South Beach diet are the best for our health?

MMM … nothing like a big juicy filet mignon … filled with infectious bacteria.
“A new study finds that some meat and poultry processed in the United States are contaminated with drug resistant bacteria.”
How much is “some meat”? Let me put it this way — the results suggest almost half of all beef, chicken, pork and turkey — from 80 different brands — have the bacteria that most commonly causes staph infections. The Los Angeles Times points a finger at the culprit…
“DNA testing suggested the animals were the source of contamination.”
A nonprofit biomedical research center in Phoenix conducted the study. Medical News Today says this, is the first nationwide assessment of contamination of the U.S. food supply with this antibiotic resistant bacteria.
“Although US authorities routinely check meats and poultry for four different types of drug-resistant bacteria, the checks do not include S. aureus.”
So should we all become vegetarians? CNN reports — eh — it’s not that serious.
“It’s not going to get you sick when you eat it. It could, possibly, maybe, harm you when you touch it. That’s the issue is that it could give you a skin infection.”
Cooking kills the bacteria. Washing your hands after handling raw meat does the job, too. KPHO interviews a scientist who says, what we should really be worried about is what farmers are feeding animals.
TGEN Microbiologist: “So they’re giving more low doses of antibiotics to make animals grow faster and to prevent diseases that may just be occurring because of how tightly they’re packed or unhygienic conditions.”
The station goes on to report — if the animals we’re eating are drug-resistant, that means we could eventually become drug resistant, too.

Hillary and Bruce, who followed a low-fat vegetarian diet in a GEICO worksite study, exemplify how office workers can lose weight, lower blood pressure, and reduce absenteeism if their employer provides healthy low-fat vegetarian meals in the company cafeteria. The findings are published in a new study published in July’s American Journal of Health Promotion.
“GEICO’s workplace nutrition program helped employees lose weight and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels,” says Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., an author of the new study. “If a company cafeteria offers low-fat vegetarian options every day, employees’ heath improves and they miss less work.” Ms. Levin is director of nutrition education for the nonprofit Washington Center for Clinical Research.
