How to Become Vegan – Go Vegan with Ease

Monday, May 21st, 2012

How to Become a Vegan — http://www.noahhammond.com This is in response to a reader who is asking me in response to my “How to Become a Vegetarian” video. How do I become a vegan?

I’m going to share my process of how I transitioned about three months into vegetarianism to full veganism, what that looked like, and some simple ways that you can go vegan with ease.

Becoming a Vegan Easily — Implementing Simple Tips!

What happened was this.

When I first became a vegetarian, I made a declaration that every time I went to the grocery store, I would buy an item I have never bought before. I would go home and Google it.

“What the heck do I do with a butternut squash?”

“Oh, OK. It’s going to be good with this thing.”

Then, I would go and buy the other ingredients that I need and make some kind of new amazing dish that I have never made before.

If you commit to only buying one item you have never bought before every time you go to the grocery store, very quickly you are now going to have a WHOLE list of new meals you like to make, new foods you’ve tried, and new foods you know how to prepare.

You are going to get SO expanded inside your awareness of what is really out there in the food world. That was the process that really started everything.

The other mindset that helped was that I made a full commitment that I was going to listen to my body really closely. I was going to literally pay such direct attention to my body that I would listen for if it liked something or it did not like something, and if it loved something or if it hated something.

I committed to only buying things that my body liked and loved and never again buying things that my body did not liked or loved.

What was I listening for? What was I paying attention for?

Things like high energy, positive emotions, and feelings of satisfaction, nourishment, and deliciousness. Those are the things that you look for in a food that SERVES you.

Food that does not serve you is going to make you feel tired, sleepy, groggy, or maybe angry. There is a lot of negative energy inside of things like steak.

How does the food actually make you feel? That was the things that I was paying attention to.

How I Turned Vegan And How I Did It!

As I kept buying these new items, trying new foods, ditching the ones that did not serve me, and keeping the ones that served me, I started finding more and more veggies and more and more things that really served me, more and more nuts, seeds, super foods, and lots of different plant-based foods that served me.

I kept noticing more and more how much my dairy and gluten — because I also went gluten-free at the same time, which means getting rid of wheat — I started noticing how that stuff was not serving me.

It came down to my body that simply straight up revolted. When I first went vegetarian, I was still under my programmed mind of:

“Oh, I need to get my protein.”

So I was eating TONS of Greek yogurts and getting lots of protein. My dairy intake went way up and so did my grain intake because I was seeing that:

“Oh, whole wheat wraps have protein. This has protein, etc. etc.”

It came to the point where I was eating a bowl of granola and Greek yogurt and I would take a bite and sneeze fifteen times. I would take a bite and sneeze fifteen times.

“Oh, light bulb! Maybe I am allergic to dairy out of nowhere for the first time in my life?”

Sure enough that was exactly what happened. As I cleaned out my body, my lactose allergy, whatever it was that I had never noticed my entire life, became very apparent.

Then, I started doing some research. I found out that milk is actually TERRIBLE for you. It’s not good for you. It’s not normal to drink milk. In fact, seventy percent of the world does not drink dairy and thirty percent of the world does.

So, WE are actually the strange ones.

Then, I also started at the same time finding out how bad gluten and wheat is for you. How your body treats it like an invading organism and how it causes micro-tears in your gut…

It’s the reason that all these people are walking around like all fluffy and mutated. People look like mutated fat. It’s not how it used to look. It’s because of our wheat and what the wheat that we have created is doing to our bodies.

Basically, by listening to my body process and finding out some more information, I removed dairy and gluten from my diet.

The last thing was the eggs. And eggs, I hang on to for a solid couple of months beyond everything else. I was done with dairy, but eggs I held on to…

Best Quinoa Salad Recipe

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

Quinoa is a versatile food, similar to rice, but with enough 9 essential amino acids to make a complete protein. It’s easy to prepare and super tasty. The salad recipe below makes an excellent meal, a tasty side dish, or a light snack. For more recipes check out my other cooking vids at http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2EFBD7E8FE2BB552

QUINOA SALAD:
ingredients:
1 cup quinoa
3 medium tomatoes (chopped)
¼ cup red onion (finely chopped)
3-5 garlic cloves (minced)
½ inch ginger (minced)
1 cucumber (chopped)
1/3 yellow pepper (chopped)
1 carrot (thinly sliced)
¼ cup parsley or cilantro (chopped)
3 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
2-3 Tbsp olive oil
2 Tbsp lemon juice
Salt (to taste)

Directions:
Add 1 cup quinoa to 2 cups water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 10-15 minutes (I find it usually takes about 15 minutes). Place cooked quinoa in bowl and let cool—doesn’t have to cool completely—by the time you get your other ingredients prepped, the quinoa will be cool enough. Add vinegar, olive oil, salt, and stir well. Add onion, ginger, and garlic. I usually chop the onion fine and MINCE the garlic and ginger VERY WELL. The raw garlic and ginger adds lots of flavor and nutrition. Give the bowl a good stir and get these ingredients mixed thoroughly. Add yellow pepper (red pepper is fine, but yellow makes a nice color contrast), cucumber, carrot. Sometimes I also add green onions—or even diced jalapenos if I’m looking for a little kick—feel free to experiment with any vegetables you enjoy in a raw state. Mix ingredients and then add the tomatoes. I like to add the tomatoes last so they don’t get too beat up by the spoon. If you’ve got some parsley or cilantro on hand, throw that in as well—I make sure I’ve got some cilantro on hand when I’m making this dish. A bit of lemon juice is a nice finish and will also help keep the colors of the dish vibrant. Bon Appétit!

Vegetarian Bodybuilding

Friday, May 18th, 2012

http://scoobysworkshop.com/vegetarianism/
Being a vegetarian will not reduce your ability to add muscle, I’m one and it hasn’t hurt me. Those who think vegetarians cant be successful bodybuilders either don’t understand the different kinds of vegetarians or don’t understand bodybuilding nutrition. Arnold fostered the incorrect view that you have to eat muscle to gain muscle. The trouble with the word “vegetarian” is that so many people have used it in so many different ways that it has basically become useless so it has been replaced by more specific and meaningful words.

The useless word “vegetarian” has been replaced by the following two more specific and useful words:
Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian: A vegetarian whose diet includes dairy products, eggs, vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts
Vegan: A strict vegetarian who consumes no animal food or dairy products
When people today say “Vegetarian” what they are really talking about is a lacto-ovo vegetarian. In other words, a diet that does not include the parts of an animal that were not given up freely. Animals happily give up their eggs and milk so vegetarians can eat those. One reason people mistakenly believe that vegetarians cant be bodybuilders is that they mistake vegans for vegetarians. The ability to consume eggs and dairy products makes an incredible difference. Vegans (those who consume no animal products whatsoever) are at a big disadvantage when it comes to adding muscle but vegetarians are not hindered at all — lets look at why this is true.

Many bodybuilders rely on skinless chicken breast for their protein and that has a quality of 136. You will note that both nonfat milk and egg whites have a higher protein quality than chicken does! Since vegetarians can eat milk and eggs, the quality of the protein they can consume is just as good as better as most meat eating bodybuilders! Vegetarians are at no disadvantage at all when it comes to adding muscle.
Now lets look at the problem that vegans face. The highest quality protein available to them is soy and it only has a quality of 117, nowhere near as good as chicken or eggs. They need to be experts on the amino acid profiles of everything they eat so they can combine food through out the day to get the all the essential amino acids they need. The second major obstacle vegans face is in getting enough protein without exceeding their daily caloric budget. All the proteins available to vegans also come with a healthy dose of carbohydrates so vegans need to be very, very strict about their nutrition in order to get sufficient protein with the amount of calories they have available.

By the way folks, I’m not a vegetarian for political, religious, or ethical reasons. I’m a vegetarian because I belive it to be healthier. Can I *prove* that a vegetarian diet is healther? No, but I can’t prove global warming either. Everyone has to decide for themselves what level of proof is required before they change their behaviour.
