Vegan Diet: Pros and Cons – as part of the expert series by GeoBeats.
There are a lot of people out there right now that are trying a raw vegan diet. It is absolutely fine and I highly recommend it for certain people. But it is not good for everyone. One of the things that can be a problem is getting enough protein in. And it is really, really important that you get enough high quality proteins to maintain your lean body mass. Eating lots of vegetables is great. Eating raw vegetables can be fine. There are certain vegetables that the human body actually does better with them being processed or cooked at some level, even if it is just blanched which is kind of like wilting some of those greens. There are certain vegetable groups like the cruciferous vegetable group (that includes broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, boc choi) that have certain constituents in it that are really hard for the body to digest and process. They are components of those vegetables that are hard on the thyroid gland and really hard on the kidneys. So once you apply heat to those you do a little bit better. You can also apply enzyme activity of microbial activity.
So one of the way those raw vegan groups can get around some of those limitations, particularly in that food group when looking at vegetables, is to ferment. So, it is not really cooking but is a processing done by microorganisms that helps to break down some of those things. So in order to be a healthy raw vegan, you actually need to spend quite a bit of time “cooking”, for lack of a better word, processing your food. Because you need to know what to put in to each of your meals to make sure you get all of those vital nutrients, to cover all the basics, so that you stay healthy. You can do a lot with juicing. Juicing can be very helpful, but then again if you get too much of certain constituents in your diet and too little of others you throw your whole system out of balance. One of the things that juicing can do is add a lot of sugar in the form of fructose. If you take the pulp out of your juice you can actually set yourself with an imbalance and push yourself towards diabetes, even though you think your eating a really healthy diet.
So it is about really learning. It is about taking the time to really know what your bio-chemistry is and to really learn about that diet that you had like to try. So what I highly recommend, it if it is something that you are interested in giving a shot at, is talk to someone- a professional- or get some really good books out of the library to learn how to do this in a healthy manner. You do not want to get yourself sick by trying to make yourself healthy.

Types of Diets:
100% Vegetarian or Vegan Diet (can also be called Herbivorous / Pythagorean)
A 100% vegetarian or vegan (pronounced VEE-gan) is someone choosing a lifestyle free from animal products for the benefit of people, animals and the environment. They eat a plant-based diet free from all animal products. Many choose not to wear leather, wool, or silk (adapted from a quote on The Vegan Society’s website).
Vegan Raw Foodist Diet – a diet of vegetables & fruits in their raw, uncooked form.
Raw Foodist Diet – usually only vegetables & fruits – but check carefully whether or not they consider raw animal and bee products to be human food.
Macrobiotic Diet – usually only plants are cooked or served raw, though some do eat (sea) animal products. A dietary and medical philosophy, balance of yin and yang. Emphasizes natural, whole, locally grown plant foods.
Carnism / Carnist Diet – followed by perhaps 93%+ of the people in the world. Eating and drinking animal flesh, eggs, and dairy.
Mostly Vegetarian Diet – a term used by those who wish to reduce the amount the amount of animal products which they consume. Some people switch gradually to an all plant based diet. People may start by removing all red meats from their diet believing them to be the most injurious ‘foods’ for the human body. Then they may gradually remove dairy, eggs, poultry and fish. Those who choose to continue their journeys will eventually get to the stage where they are eating only plant-based foods.
Lacto Diet – often misleadingly called lacto-vegetarian – it is diet that includes the milk of various non-human mammals – termed ‘dairy products’ (milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, etc.) but usually excludes eggs & animal body tissues (flesh).
Ovo Diet – often misleadingly called ovo-vegetarian – a diet that includes the eggs & embryos of various creatures, practitioners might or might not include dairy in their diets but they do not eat animal body tissues (flesh).
Pescetarian Diet – a diet where sea animals are consumed but the flesh of land creatures is not. Dairy & eggs are sometimes also consumed.

Meat vs. Vegetarian Diet – as part of the expert series by GeoBeats.
Meat and vegetarians, omnivore, pesco-lacto-ovotarians, vegans, there is all these different ways we can align ourselves in our eating habits. There are good things and bad things about all of those. Eating a vegan lifestyle, raw vegan lifestyle, does not mean that somehow you are walking around with a halo, and eating an omnivore lifestyle does not mean you walk around with little devil horns and a pitchfork. It is not about that. It is about what works for your biochemistry. There are people who can be very healthy vegetarians. There are people who do not do well, at all, as a strict vegetarian. So, part of this is trying to figure out how to marry lifestyle and choices with philosophy. And so, you have to be able to look at both of those things. When I work with people that really want to try the vegetarian lifestyle, or the vegan lifestyle, my suggestion is look at this as, this is the new… Well, it is kind of like getting a masters degree in you. You have to learn how to build a healthy eating plan for yourself as a vegetarian. You have to think a little bit more. You have to be a little more dedicated than you do if you are willing to eat some animal products.
Now, the trick with the animal products is you have to actually be willing to look at how did that animal get to be on my plate? Or that cheese, or that butter. So, you really want to look carefully at how the animal was raised, treated, processed, because all of those pieces changes the health of the animal, which then changes the health of you when you eat it. So, regardless of whether you are looking at omnivore, eating everything, vegetarian, eating only plants, having a little bit of fish, having a little bit of dairy, having a few eggs, across the board, my recommendation is look very closely at how that food got to you. What are the toxic loads that it brings to you. And then, how can you make even better choices within that range? So, if you eat beef, can you eat organic grass fed beef? If you eat eggs, can you find those eggs locally from chickens next door that were running around eating slugs and bugs like they are supposed to? So, really looking across the board, there, in terms of the health aspects, we all could use more vegetables.
I have a couple of vegetarian clients who told me they were vegetarian and their soul source of food intake was macaroni and cheese. That is not a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. So, we really need to be looking at the big picture. How can we bring in more variety on all of those aspects and all of those ways and patterns of eating.

So, a vegetarian diet does help you lose weight when you eat the right
type of vegetarian food.
I understand that it’s difficult to stick to a vegetarian diet with all
the whole natural foods as the ingredients unless you’re working in the comfort
of your own home.
Don’t try to do it over few days.
The key
is, make the changes naturally.
